President Nicolas Sarkozy has promised to emulate the CCTV technology numbers used by London in an attempt to track criminals and terrorists.
The Paris metro and rail networks already run 9500 CCTV devices but the police only have 300 of these at their disposal. A new scheme will see 1200 new CCTV cameras installed, mostly in high risk areas.
London has just begun a six month trial of CCTV in select buses.
Tweny one double decker buses will be fitted with the real-time imaging technology, monitored by the Transport of London department.
The latest number plate recognition technology is being used to cut down the kerb crawling activities seen in many of Britian’s streets.
