MPs Urged to Promote CCTV
The government recently issued strong advice to MP’s to promote the use of CCTV and ensure public bodies have a good correspondence with the police regarding CCTV footage.
Statutory duty should be placed on the council and public bodies to increase the time in which CCTV evidence can be gained by police officers. Up-to-date information should be continually fed to the police about the CCTV systems in operation.
With its ever growing success, CCTV is now much more commonly used for evidence than DNA; making the difference in bringing forward a prosecution.
Currently the police have to collect evidence from a wide variety of sources that do not have to follow any minimum requirements. With a statutory duty in place, collection of evidence could become much faster and criminal activity prosecuted faster.
