The technology bar of CCTV surveillance has risen again with the recent arrest of a burglar after only his legs were captured on camera.

A new technology that analyses the way people walk has launched in Lancashire. The bow-legged burglar was identified by his walking style after later being detected on a system that compared his walk with the coverage from the house burglary.

Ian Linane, a podiatrist is the leading figure in the comparison of CCTV evidence.  Since 2000 he has been assisting the police with evidence proving criminals to be the same person as caught in previous recordings just by their stance and walk alone.

Linane stated that the comparison of evidence is not 100% as is DNA testing but there is a sliding scale between a possible match and a definitive one.
